Sears is an American department store chain that carries appliances, clothing, and more.  It was start way back in the late 1888 as a catalog and mail order company.  In 1925 they opened retail locations and grew from there, according to Wikipedia.

From the 1920s to the 1950s, Sears built many urban department stores (apart from, but not far from, existing cbds, and they overshadowed the mail-order business. Starting in the 1950s, the company expanded into suburban markets, and malls in the 1960s and 1970s.

The company was bought by fellow department store Kmart in 2005, which was in bankruptcy at the time and renamed itself Sears Holdings upon completion of the merger. Measured by domestic revenue, Sears was the largest retailer in the United States until October 1989, when it was surpassed in revenue by Walmart. They do have operations internationally in Canada and Mexico.

Sears has been on the decline of late. Sears has spent much of 2014 and 2015 selling off portions of its balance sheet; namely Lands’ End and its stake in Sears Canada. They have not changed with the times like Walmart and Target, and are falling victim to the department store decline.
