About Food Lion

Food Lion is one of the largest grocery chains in the United States, with headquarters in Salisbury, North Carolina. The Food Lion chain began in 1957, when it was founded by Wilson Smith, Ralph Ketner, and Brown Ketner in Salisbury, North Carolina. Originally, the brand was called Food Town, and expanded through North Carolina and eventually into other states. Upon reaching Virginia, the chain became affiliated with a group of independent stores known as Foodtown. Due to the similarity of the two names, Ralph Ketner decided to rebrand the chain as Food Lion in 1983. The chain was independent to begin with, but later came under the control of Delhaize Group, which was based out of Belgium, in 1974.

The chain finished rebranding entirely as Food Lion in March of 1983. They continued their expansion in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States during the 1980s. They opened many stores in states such as North Carolina and Virginia, where they already had opened stores, and ventured into new territories including Georgia and Maryland. They established a mascot, called George the Food Lion, in January of 1997. The chain currently has more than 1,100 stores open, spanning 10 states in the United States and employing more than 63,000 people.

"In late 2013, Food Lion introduced a new concept and decor at a store in Concord, North Carolina. The first decor and design in 2013 featured yellow-brown walls with colorful tiles with the signage in the stores with produce coolers which would be featured in some later remodels with major improvements in the layout. The new design and decor was officially given to 76 of their stores in the greater Wilmington and Greenville, North Carolina markets shortly after. In March 2015, plans were announced for remodeling of its 162 locations in the Raleigh, North Carolina, market. The Raleigh market remodels were expected to be completed in stores on a rolling basis between April and October 2015. This remodeling improved the last design and decor with tan and white-yellow colored walls and photos being with signage. One other major change was the new butcher shop which was at some locations.

In March 2016, the company announced that they would make a $215 million investment in its greater Charlotte-area stores and western NC stores. This included remodeling 142 stores, additional price investments, and investments in associates and the community through its initiatives. In July 2016, as part of the corporate merger between Delhaize and Ahold, Food Lion was required to divest 61 locations to a variety of competitors including Supervalu and Weis Markets in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia to satisfy the Federal Trade Commission's review of the two parent companies merger."
