Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews, otherwise known as Red Robin, is an American chain of
casual dining restaurants started in 1969 in Seattle, Washington. The original Red Robin was first
called Sam's Tavern where the owner, Sam, would sing "When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob,
Bob, Bobbin' Along)" with his barbershop quartet.

In 1973, they started serving their famous The Red Robin Gourmet Cheeseburger, the Bacon
Cheeseburger and the Royal Red Robin Burger(topped with a fried egg) and changed the burger
world forever. Their mascot is named Red.

In 2000, Red Robin began to heavily expand, influenced heavily by their merger with The Snyder Group, their largest franchisee. In May of 2000, Red Robin celebrated the opening of their 150th restaurant. In 2002, Red Robin went public, starting at $12/share, and selling 4 million out of 5 million shares. They also entered into a three-year $40 million agreement to fund more restaurants in the future. Coming into the present day, Red Robin has launched online ordering and catering.

In 1969, local Seattle restaurant entrepreneur Gerry Kingen bought the restaurant and expanded it.

The business dropped the "Sam's" and simply became Red Robin. The first restaurant was 1,200 sq ft (110 sq m). It was a favored hangout for University of Washington students. Kingen continued to operate the location as a tavern for a few years, but later added hamburgers to the menu, eventually giving fans 28 different burgers to choose from, and sales skyrocketed.

After 10 years of building the Red Robin concept Kingen decided to franchise it, which proved to be significant in the development of the chain. In 2000, Red Robin merged with the Snyder Group, and Michael Snyder became president, chairman and CEO of the merged company. Snyder took the company public in
2002.
