The two spellings — “donut” and “doughnut” — exist because of language evolution and simplification:

  1. "Doughnut" is the original spelling, dating back to the early 1800s. It combines dough (the batter) and nut (because early versions were small and nut-shaped).

  2. "Donut" is a simplified, Americanized spelling that became popular in the 20th century, especially after Dunkin’ Donuts adopted it in the 1950s. It's shorter, easier to spell, and fits better in branding and signage.
